---------------------
Moderator: anything in particular we can help you with today?
---------------------
Mark: nothing specific i'm afraid just looking for another insight into video/audio as a learning tool
---------------------
lucy: yes, me too - just looking really
---------------------
Moderator: what fields are you in? audio and video in teaching and learning covers a lot of ground these days!
---------------------
Mark: well recently we have been recording students performances and hosting them on the VLE and recording a few lectures
---------------------
Moderator: @mark - is that blackboard based?
---------------------
Mark: no moodle
---------------------
Moderator: ah ok. are you just recording audio, or video and screen capture too?
---------------------
Mark: using all 3 in different ways
---------------------
Moderator: i've been looking at some interesting ways of combining these into teaching objects and then interfacing with VLE - things like Camtasia Relay and Panopto. do you use anything like that yet?
---------------------
Mark: use Snapz X Pro to instructional videos to use the VLE
---------------------
Moderator: yes i know it. Camtasia user myself, but similar M.O. i understand
---------------------
Mark: plus a few lecturers (of Music Production/Technology) have been recording (with commentary) on how to use audio software
---------------------
Mark: it has been well received
---------------------
Moderator: i bet it has! that sounds very interesting. we're working on our screencasting workflow at the moment and trying to standardise our output to keep the quality high. do you have an agreed workflow, or is it still quite ad hoc?
---------------------
Mark: very ad hoc
---------------------
Mark: like in a lot of places some lecturers run with the capabilities of the VLE
---------------------
Moderator: heh! i know the feeling! there are so many elements to producing a good screencast
---------------------
Mark: i'm going to recommend Screenr which I saw on the JISC website
---------------------
Mark: great for quick demos as we have issues with IT departments installing software on machines
---------------------
Moderator: zak is the specialist there i'm afraid - i'm not familiar with screenr. what appeals about it for you in particular?
---------------------
Mark: that it's online rather than having to be installed
---------------------
Mark: it is connected to your Twitter account
---------------------
Moderator: i see. i have been using screen capture + audio to make quick training videos, but those have so far been on machines with camtasia on them
---------------------
Mark: as soon as you submit the video it is available to your followers
---------------------
Mark: it's free and no licence is required
---------------------
Moderator: i can see the appeal of that, but also potential problems if you want to limit to a particular group of users
---------------------
Mark: i have only looked into it briefly but I presume there must be some security settings
---------------------
Mark: my thoughts were that if lecturer embeds their twitter feed onto their VLE page the video is automatically hosted
---------------------
Moderator: at the other end of the scale i've been looking at camtasia relay, which has its own server and 'satellite' machines which submit captures which are then encoded automatically and redirected to specific areas of the VLE. very flexible, but obviously needs setting up with a user database and maintaining. also very not free!!
---------------------
Moderator: that is a neat solution - zak will like it a lot (your screenr/twitter/moodle combo that is)
---------------------
Mark: cool
---------------------
Mark: i need to look into it further because I think it could work really well
---------------------
Moderator: would be very interested to see the results
---------------------
Mark: I would like to try and do something innovative with music teaching and elearning
---------------------
Moderator: i guess another appeal of screenr is that it is platform independent. i guess you have a mixed ecosystem of macs and pcs...
---------------------
Mark: oh yes
---------------------
Moderator: have just had a quick look on their site, and it explains the twitter hook-up, so i'll check that out. thanks
---------------------
Mark: have you heard of Tim Speight?
---------------------
Moderator: no i don't think so - where is he based?
---------------------
Mark: he is a professional recording engineer
---------------------
Mark: he has created some online tutorials on aspects of recording hosted on youtube. really simple idea but very affective
---------------------
Mark: able to demonstate to students the basics and they can then go an experiment on the foundations of the video tutorials
---------------------
Moderator: cool - will search him out
---------------------
Moderator: many thanks all for coming along - if you have any particular questions then our helpdesk is .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
