Transcript of questions and answers

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): we have a short screencast in a while, but if you have any questions please fire away

---------------------
Steve: I've started using Camtasia - as a means to 'lecturecast' in short bursts - and am here to pick up some tips!

---------------------
Sue: I would be interested in what people think is the best free screencast tool (and the easiest for non-techie people to use)

---------------------
Steve: yes Sue - absolutely

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): which version do you use steve? i'm getting very into the new Mac version - all my screencasts are made in that currently

---------------------
Andrew: Jing - without a doubt....

---------------------
Sue: better than screenr?

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): the screencast coming up should be of interest then sue...

---------------------
Sue: cool thanks!

---------------------
Ant (JISC Digital Media): We have been experimenting with some free online screencapture tools you will see in the screencast shortly...

---------------------
Sue: screenr gets very good reviews on twitter

---------------------
Steve: Jing is good - but does it integrate everything like Camtasia?

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): i played with screen toaster quite a bit in advance of this session and was impressed

---------------------
Andrew: I like Jing because of the simplicity. Esp for non techy people.

---------------------
Steve: ...looking at screenr now....

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): screenr is good and very simple - the twitter integration is neat too

---------------------
Steve: aha - had been looking for w ay to use Twitter as en Edu tool - this is it! many thanks

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): yes, you can embed a twitter feed onto a VLE containing all the screencast links, for example

---------------------
Clive: Is there any evidence of the effectiveness of podcasts for learning?

---------------------
Steve: Is it too early to judge on such evidence, how widespread is the use of podcasts? Could it impinge on 'social' environments of students too much? (I'm asking because I really want to start using them next year)

---------------------
Sue: do you mean students creating them or the tutors?

---------------------
Steve: for me - tutors - but I'm also thinking of creating assessment tasks in the form of visual podcasts - or offer the option to do them that way instead of paper based

---------------------
Clive: for me - tutor lead podcast bur I am looking at student (peer) podcasts

---------------------
Ant (JISC Digital Media): A large number of universities in the US use iTunes U to deliver podcasts of lectures, etc, but are UK institutions likely to use it in the same way?

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): i don't know of any study on the effectiveness of podcasts specifically. the 'sounds good' project had some interesting data about the use of audio feedback http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/programmes/usersandinnovation/soundsgood.aspx

---------------------
Andrew: We've had some interesting use of screen casts here to replace repetitive lectures, freeing time for more personal tuition.

---------------------
Steve: I sent a sample lecturecast to students (sorry for this long post and hogging the forum) - here are some responses:
"presume you'd be putting web links/further reading on the blackboard or forum...This is flexible- could take as long as you want to do the tasks or comment on forum....It is something that can be saved and referred back to easily during the year.... did like the condensed nature of it. It was straight to the point, easy to follow in terms of structure....I think lectures such as these could be good to supplement/run along side the classroom lectures. Small nuggets of Steve available online, anytime! "

---------------------
Andrew: We use Planet e-stream as an inhouse streaming solution.

---------------------
Sue: Here is a link to ALT-J article on the use of podcasts http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/content~db=all?content=10.1080/09687760903247609

---------------------
Clive: Should we not consider a different paradigm for on-line tutoring?

---------------------
Sue: Thanks Andy - I think we are also looking at setting up an iTunes-U presence but haven't done it yet

---------------------
Clive: Haven't done it yet... I connect with that!

---------------------
Sue: it is on the cards though - but you have to have a certain number of podcasts/screencasts, which we haven't yet but have a current project working on this

---------------------
Andrew: Screenr - is there a means to create local screen casts or do they have to be published?

---------------------
Clive: You can record Elluminate sessions to a local server

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): @ Andrew - Screen Toaster allows download of your screen capture and/or publishing

---------------------
Alison : Hi Lucy and I currently have a project underway which is looking at new channels to disseminate academic research . This will include iTunes U

---------------------
Steve: sounds fascinating

---------------------
Alison : It certainly is but a steep learning curve

---------------------
Sue: Alison - sounds good - I think we are going to get our researchers to do short podcasts for iTunes-u as well

---------------------

Andrew: More interested in recording instruction screen-casts than virtual classroom sessions. Was concerned that Screenr forces you into working in a proprietary program. I like the flexibility of Jing (and possibly no Screen Toaster) because it allows me to decide what I want to do with the screen-cast. I don't have to publish it through their streaming server.

---------------------
Steve: Yes - that is exactly the issue I have with some apps/programs - let me decide where it goes, and how it can be saved/distributed

---------------------
Clive: Jing is OK

---------------------
Steve: I used Jing to capture some images of Camtasia... which all seems very strange and postmodern

---------------------
Andrew: Careful with that Steve, you could cause a vortex in the space/time continuum.

---------------------
Steve: @ Andrew - I have my Dr Who socks on, so that's ok

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): i was using Camtasia to capture Screen Toaster capturing Screenr the other day, which was getting very confusing by the end of it!!

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): Screen Toaster is the most flexible online screen capture i've tried (vs Screenr and Jing)

---------------------
Steve: is it good for video sizes? Camtasia can be horrendous

---------------------
Joel (JISC Digital Media): @ Alison. Hi, I've just joined in! Are you aware of the Steeple project? http://www.steeple.org.uk/wiki/Main_Page There. are some excellent resources regarding iTunes U (specifically a paper by Peter Robinson, I'll try and dig for a link to)

---------------------
Alison : Yes Thanks our IT guys are actively involved with Steeple

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): @Steve - what video sizing problems have you encountered with Camtasia?

---------------------
Steve: that they are huuuuuge when saved - I probably set the frame rate too high (novice user) but much lower than 30fps and it looks like lots of rapid screenshots...

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): default export setting is to the same resolution as screen, but Advanced Export lets you alter this

---------------------
Steve: aha - user error then

---------------------
Steve: oh the export was fine - just capture sizes were horrendous - my mistake

---------------------
Ant (JISC Digital Media): I've had trouble on an older PC where the screen capture is very jerky - but that's usually because the computer's processor is pretty slow

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): @Steve - you can set a smaller capture area if you want - most screen capture apps offer this feature

---------------------
Maryse: I mostly support library staff in FE/Sixth Form and looking at screencasts for student inductions - what are pros and cons of various apps (budget always an issue of course) but also ease of use to produce them - one of ours recently showed some examples of ViewletBuilder and I promote the free stuff on EduApps http://www.eduapps.org/

---------------------
Steve: think I'll need to revisit this a little - I did capture the area I wanted - even played the (captured video game) in small window - but - 4 minutes of capture = 400mb file size

---------------------
Joel (JISC Digital Media): @ Alison/those interested in iTunesU. A really interesting overview paper of Oxford's use of itunesU here by Barry Cornelius... http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/podcasts/presentations/2009iwmw/handout.pdf - taken from a presentation last year

---------------------
Clive: Question: How much help do people (tutors) get from their IT department in developing on-line resources?
---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): just about to show the screencast - a new window will appear. includes audio

---------------------
Ant (JISC Digital Media): You can press play on the video when you like - there's also a link below the video if you want to download to view it larger

---------------------
Andrew: @ Gavin Does Screen toaster allow you to do screen capture (still images) as well as screencast? Very useful for creating presentations.

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): not really - I'd use 'Print Screen' for that or cmd-shift-4 on a Mac

---------------------
Andrew: Jing does allow screen capture, much better than Print Screen as it allows you to capture specific areas of the screen.

---------------------
Steve: i've recently bought a Samson USB mic - really good, cheap! (as audio was mentioned in the vid)

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): USB mics are a very good solution for screencast/podcast use. we have a Rode Podcaster and are looking at adding a Samson GTrack for comparison

---------------------
Steve: it's tiny too, and records acoustic instruments nicely!

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): also testing an Apogee One on the Mac which has a built-in mic too - very impressive little device

---------------------
Maryse: i use Gadwin http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/ for stills

---------------------
Steve: really interesting session - thanks all!

---------------------
Clive: thanks!

---------------------
Andrew: Thanks folks

---------------------
Shai: At a session in Leeds a college for the deaf were showing how they have used screen capture videos with subtitles (I think they use Camtasia). Any views on managing subtitles with screen capture?

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): Screen Toaster has a simple tool for inserting subtitles. Camtasia is more flexible but a bit more complex

---------------------
Alison : Has anyone got any thoughts about attaching the branding elements of user generated video (Intro slides, outro slides web addresses for further information ) which could be used on many channels in the public domain iTunes U and YouTube as well as being published from university sites?

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): @Alison - I have developed templates for our screencasts which add video branding - logos, bugs transitions etc - is that what you mean?

---------------------
Alison : Yes that is what I mean - thanks - did you use Photoshop for this?

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): @Alison - I use a mixture of tools, Photoshop included, but also Sketchup for the little animation and Logic for the audio ident

---------------------
Sue: I presume this screencast of screencasting software will be available on the website? I haven't got the audio to work yet
---------------------
Ant (JISC Digital Media): yes - it's here: http://www.jiscdigitalmedia.ac.uk/surgery/session/apr-21/

---------------------
Sue: Thanks Ant

---------------------
Ant (JISC Digital Media): @Sue - sorry about the audio problems - I think probably an Elluminate issue rather than the video, but let us know if you have trouble with the web version

---------------------
Sue: Thanks just tried the web version and works fine - I did the audio set up with Elluminate and that audio worked ok - will go and watch it now - thanks for your help.

---------------------
Steve: do you use these in a blended or all online course? how do the students repsond?

---------------------
Alison : Once the templates are created is it easy to attach them to the file?

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): it kind of works the other way round - i start with the template and import/create the new material within it then arrange the branding elements around the content. i plan to make a more advanced screencast on the process soon, and am developing a screencasting workshop too

---------------------
Sue: thanks all!

---------------------
Steve: thats great - many thanks all

---------------------
Alison : That's interesting We are working towards an automated system so that users can remotely include all the metadata and upload the asset for review - ( copyright and compliance , quality etc)

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): @Alison - yes I've been looking at this too, but that requires a slightly more integrated delivery mechanism than we currently have. have been looking at Panopto too with relation to this

---------------------
Shai: many thanks all.

---------------------
trish: Hi sorry i'm late - haven't got a microphone as on a very old pc at college - am I too late?

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): hi trish - just wrapping up i'm afraid, but there will be a transcript of the session available. did you have any question in particular?

---------------------
trish: what's this about?

---------------------
Gavin (JISC Digital Media): we've been discussing screencasting mostly today, but all questions re digital media welcome

---------------------
Ant (JISC Digital Media): @trish you can watch the screencast we showed here: http://www.jiscdigitalmedia.ac.uk/surgery/session/apr-21/

---------------------
trish: thanks - will watch screencast
