Storage, Access, Use and Onward Sharing
You are here because either you have created a recording as part of a project or you have found one on the Internet or other existing source and you now want to find out about your ongoing responsibilities related to its use.
This section raises awareness of the issues and where possible points to good practice. However, whilst this is a growing area of importance, there is as yet little firm guidance or best practice relating to the handling of clinical recordings in non-clinical educational settings. Many organisations are only just beginning to consider what their responsibilities are in this area.
The main focus is to ensure that you and your colleagues act in a responsible, professional manner and continue to treat those people who appear in the recordings (either directly or indirectly) with respect and dignity. This includes how storage and access to the recordings is managed according to the conditions of consent granted by the patient and any licensing agreement (if you or your organisation is not the copyright holder). One example of why this degree of care is necessary would be if a Freedom of Information request was made – following good practice ensures a timely response is possible.
