The YouTube viewer is now in a widescreen (16 by 9) aspect ratio.
Non-widescreen (i.e. 4 by 3) videos are shown with pillarboxing (black bands on either side of the image, as opposed to the more common letterboxing used to show widescreen images on a non-widescreen display). Read the official announcement.
