Wikispaces, a web-based company that creates scalable Wiki environments, has announced that it is providing free wikis for any higher education purposes (note that Wikispaces uses the term "higher education" in the North American sense which includes both HE and FE).

The wikis have no limits, are private and are free of advertisements.  Simple tools are provided  for editing and maintinaing them.  They normally cost USD$50 per year.

In addition to their obvious use in collaborative projects, wikis can also be used to showcase digital media to a group for the purposes of dissemination and to solicit feedback.

Wikispaces has been providing free wikis for educational purposes for the past 5 years.  In that time they have supplied almost 1,000,000 wikis to primary and secondary schools.  Hopefully there will soon be many more as a result of this announcement.
