A simple way to help retrieve a lost or stolen mobile device is to create a custom home screen with contact instructions for the 'finder'.
All you need is a nice picture, and an image editing application.
I used GIMP, the free open source application, to crop the image to the pixel dimensions of the screen (in this case 960x640), and to overlay text giving contact details for the phone's owner, which is positioned so that it doesn't obscure on-screen controls. The image can then be saved in a supported format, such as JPEG. Most modern mobile devices allow images to be installed or synced via a cable, removable memory card or as an email attachment. Adobe produces a program called Device Central that allows users to simulate and preview the appearance of media for most mobile devices.

We have more information about editing images with open source software in our document Introduction to GIMP Image Editing Software
