It isn't always possible or desirable to use a computer-based audio workstation to record audio. Whether recording on location at a lecture, event or live performance (all with the performers' permission, naturally..), making audio notes or recording audio feedback, a computer with all the necessary peripherals and software may not be available, suitable, or indeed welcome in the environment or workflow.
A dedicated and portable device designed for the task is often the only practical solution - especially to field recording tasks - but there are a range of devices at vastly different price points, and offering a variety of features, some of which will be more relevant than others to particular users. In this new short guide to Portable Digital Audio Recorders we look at the different types of portable and field recorder, their strengths, and their suitability for specific tasks.
