In Jakob Nielsen's latest alertbox Photos as Web Content he demonstrates the results of a recent eyetracking study regarding the use of photos with/as web content.

Users pay close attention to photos and other images that contain relevant information but ignore fluffy pictures used to "jazz up" Web pages

I'm sure we have all had the "I need an image" moment, and this study helps to remind us to think if we really do need that stock/generic image. If we use this blog as an example, I try to find images that I believe provide context to the content. With that said, often the image is not part of the content and may not always be required - hence no image today as the only suitable image would be that of a screenshot of an eyetracking study which I do not have.

If you have any good or bad examples please do share.
