With online sessions gaining in popularity and use, this is a quick look at how we have used Elluminate for our online surgeries, and some of the feedback we've had from users. Many of our users have recently been expressing increasing interest in delivering online interactive sessions. If you want more information contact Zak or Gavin, and check out the surgery archive.
This is a short promotional video we made to explain what it's all about...
JISC Digital Media introduced the online surgery in September of 2009, with a group session looking at Podcasting. In the fifteen surgery sessions since then we have covered a range of topics, from camera techniques to setting up an audio recording space, finding free images, and the digital lifecycle.
The last four part series on screencasting included guest spots from expert contributors, and attracted over 120 attendees from all over the education sector.
“One topic covered by experts with case studies, not over long, plenty of background reading/watching to accompany”
Susan Clarkson, University of Huddersfield
Each free drop-in surgery has a theme which is explored by our team of advisors and expert guests, using mixed media presentation, screencast and web tours. Presenters and participants interact through the Elluminate online learning environment, which can be accessed from any compatible machine with a web connection.
“[the most useful aspect is] being able to type questions and have them answered almost instantly”
Sam Rhodes, Doncaster College
“I just love the delivery mechanism, through Elluminate.”
Caroline Graham, University of the West of England
Participants in these one-hour sessions can simply watch and listen, or can take part in an open text chat discussion, ask advice from our team on any topic relating to the surgery theme, or share their experiences and knowledge with other users, and they’re always a source of lively conversation!
“Great sense of community, especially with sharing knowledge and best practice”
John Lockhart, University of Edinburgh
In the latest series of surgeries, held on four consecutive Wednesdays in early 2011, we tackled various technical and pedagogic aspects of using screencasting for different teaching and learning purposes. This series saw the surgery take on its most structured and wide-ranging form yet, with live online presentation and Q&A from members of the JISC Digital Media team, and some fascinating guest presentations and case studies from Nitin Parmar, Andrew Middleton and Anne Marie Cunningham, who shared their experiences in using screencasts for lecture capture and providing student feedback.
“It was useful to see how experienced screencasters work”
“So many of us are doing the same thing, reinventing the wheel independently: this is a far faster way to speed up the process, and embed best practice”
Richard Haggerty, IT and Marketing Specialist
Look out for more online surgeries during 2011, featuring our digital media experts and special guests, and contact us if you’d like to be involved, or want to suggest a future topic or theme...
“Very quick, easy and cheap way of getting some training and a bit of networking. Excellent.”
Jane Helgesen, University of East Anglia

“Colleagues with less experience in the area will find this session invaluable; I shall be recommending they watch the recording.”
Jade Kelsall, University of Leeds
