There was a time when nonlinear editing systems were new and all the major studios used one of two systems, Avid or Lightworks.
Avid continued to prosper, but Lightworks fell on hard times, possibly because their system used to require a lot of custom hardware. Lightworks kept up development, but was eventually sold to EditShare. And EditShare has decided to do a remarkable thing.
In a week or so, Lightworks will be released as open source for Windows. Or to put it another way, a fully kitted out professional editing system which supports different camera and compression formats, real time effects, multicamera editing, project sharing and much more will soon be available for free on the Internet. O frabjous day!
This release really could be a game changer in the editing world. As soon as it's out we'll be testing it here and will blog our impressions, so stay tuned for more news.
P.S. Linux and Mac users do not despair: ports for those systems will be forthcoming -- but probably not for a year.
