As www.edmediashare.org enters its fourth week, higher than expected view rates demonstrate the potential for the new web service.
An exciting outcome from sharing online videos used to support teaching, learning and research on edmediashare is the large increase of views experienced by some titles. The Chemistry Vignette videos shared by Dr Simon Lancaster had received around 10 to 20 views in their four weeks on YouTube. Within hours of posting on edmediashare these titles had more than doubled this figure and within days had ten times as many views as on YouTube. We need to look into this in more detail, but it appears that some videos on edmediashare in addition to garnering increased views are reaching a more targetted audience than on YouTube. Dr Lancaster has seen an increase in interest in his project and recently posted on Twitter: "Edmediashare is the best way I've come across to share educational media!"
Other early successes are the e-learning podcasts produced by COFA Online in Australia and recommended by Roger Gardner at the University of Bristol. These are regularly re-tweeted and are generating hundreds of views.
Dr Nick Pearce at Durham University has also recommended the YouTube playlists he uses to support his Sociology and Anthropology courses. Two big hits from these lists are sociologist Lawrie Taylor's stand-up routine for Comic Relief, and a critique of the liberal press featuring Noam Chomsky.
Many of the videos recommended to edmediashare have been made with an explicit pedagogical aim, but the site also features videos that have no such aim - but which have demonstrated their effectiveness in supporting learning. We are very keen for you to share the video you use to support your teaching, learning and research, whether it is explicitly educational or not. If you haven't done so already, go to www.edmediashare.org, click 'share' and let us know what videos you use.
