YouTube goes widescreen

The YouTube viewer is now in a widescreen (16 by 9) aspect ratio.

Non-widescreen (i.e. 4 by 3) videos are shown with pillarboxing (black bands on either side of the image, as opposed to the more common letterboxing used to show widescreen images on a non-widescreen display).  Read the official announcement.

Launch of Europeana, the European online library

There’s a nice news post about it on the BBC website.

But don’t bother going to the website (http://www.europeana.eu/portal/), as it’s gone down due to over-popularity on the order of 10,000,000 hits per hour.  They’ll be bringing it back up in mid-December.  In the meantime you can check out a preview at http://dev.europeana.eu/.
